I wouldn't want to work...

... for the city of Bozeman, Montana. If you apply for a job with the city, you'll find this on the application:

"Please list any and all current personal or business websites, web pages or memberships on any Internet-based chat rooms, social clubs or forums, to include, but not limited to: Facebook, Google, Yahoo, YouTube.com, MySpace, etc."

That's not all. It also requires the applicant's user names and password information for all those sites.

Obviously that would also include members of Fetlife and Spankolife.

Would you out yourself for the sake of a job? How would you fill out that application? How much or how little information would you include?

Late-breaking news: After this story hit the blogopshere, the city had so many complaints that the requirement was removed from the application form.

Hermione, I'm glad that you spotted that, the denouement makes the story.
This time the bureaucrats didn't get away with it.
Love and warm hugsw,
Paul.

The request should be listed as "Optional" at the very least. Sounds illegal to even ask for all that information.

Wow, that is... or was... something else. Can understand that there are certain jobs/positions in which sensitive personal information could create a problem. That seems best left to individuals to manage though, and certainly has nothing to do with something as mundane as a city job.

Honestly can't imagine ANYONE putting down "I belong to FetLife under the name PaddleMyAss" on a job application... lol... nevermind sharing their PASSWORD, which could threaten the security of friends. The really honest would decline to apply for the job... the rest would simply lie. Not exactly a smart filter.

Weird story and you'd like to think that some clueless bureaucrat came up with the requirement. Have to wonder if this sort of thing will become a trend though. Sad, because we're talking about legal activities here. It's a reason to not use your real name online to your kink though... not if you could come back to haunt you.

Thanks for sharing!

Wow! I can't believe that was ever asked and I am so glad that they didn't get away with it. I might have told them that I had a facebook account but I even Nick doesn't have my password and although I would give it to him if he asked I would never give it to an employer. How dare they even think they could have gotten away with asking such a thing!

Hugs,
PK

I would not have got a job there....lol, because I would have written in answer to that question, "like f**k...."
You NEVER compromise your security by giving out your password, THATS WHY ITS A PASSWORD, duhhhhh....

Amazed they expected people to comply....

I can't imagine anyone actually giving away their passwords for private accounts to a prospective employer. Good thing someone put a stop to it, but it's plenty scary to realize someone thought of it in the first place. What's next? Shall we submit a copy of our browsing history along with our résumé?

It boggles the mind, doesn't it? As Daisy said, that's just compromising your security, which you should never do! Maybe it was a test...?

Actually, the explanation for the original requirement was that the city hires police and the like, and they have to be able to investigate a person's background. Fine, but not that way.

Even for only vanilla stuff that is totally out of order. It ranks along the lines of an employer granting a job application if you give them permission to have a poke through your underwear draw and unless that prospective employer is Erin Grey or Julia Bradbury, there is no way they are getting permission to do that either.

Makes one woinder about the people you would be working for. The application and interview process is not a one way street. I'd have a real hard time hooking on with such a crowd.

Seems perfectly clear that this is somewhere yo would not want to work.

Hermione,

Bozeman, MT is way down the long road to nowhere. I doubt they have many job seekers out there to begin with. Compounding the problem, I can't imagine surviving the winter in such a remote spot without a few good kinks to pass the time.

At least someone finally explained to them why this is a bad idea.

Hugs,
Bonnie

Gosh darney dangle it and I was going to apply for the much coveted post of Bozeman dog catcher. Ten dollars a day and as much dog as you can eat.......not to mention getting a really smart uniform.

It makes me wonder at the collective intelligence of the City Council, pretty damned poor I should imagine.

If I received an application that wanted all that info I certainly wouldn't go for the job.

I can't believe they thought they could get away with it. Glad to see that they got complaints.

Thanks Hermione.
