50 Shades of Grey - America Speaks Out

The satirical website The Onion asks Americans what they think of the phenomenal success of the novel 50 Shades of Grey. Publishing house Vintage has sold 10 million copies in just six weeks.

Here are three opinions:

"Whatever happened to the good old days of finding a cheap paperback with women spanking each other on the cover in your dad's sock drawer?"

"I was really excited about it until I opened the book and guess what? It's just a bunch of words."

"Idiots. There's no way there are more than 12 shades of grey."

And there you have it. Don't take these seriously; they are meant to be tongue in cheek. (Click here for the original article.)

Most women I have spoken to think the scenes in the book are hot, but that it is unfortunate that Christian's abuse as a child is blamed for his dark side.

Hermione. with this book "Fifty Shades of Grey". being a best-seller. Maybe a lot more people will try having 'a spanking good time'. Which will turn more bare bottoms, into Shades of Blushing Red.

Overall I was disappointed, I kept waiting for the good part and it never happened. There were only a couple of spanking scenes, and they were not especially good in my view. BDSM seems to be one of the main themes here and most of that does not interest me very much. The innocence of the leading Lady, and the emotions she goes through as she learns first hand about all the erotic things he teaches her is quite good however. Over all I would give the book a B.

I have heard so much buzz about this book but the friends that have read it say it's lacking. (To be fair we all read the Sleeping Beauty series by Anne Rice just to give some perspective!) I think one reason it is so popular is that it brings up a subject that most women WANT to talk about but never knew how to. :P
Makes me wish I had a bookclub to join!!!!

So glad to have found your blog. Looking forward to reading more.

Fondly,
Addy

Loved the tongue in cheek comments Hermione, thanks. Can't comment on the book as I haven't read it yet.

The books are Romance novels. The best part? They have given vanilla women permission to talk about kink. It has introduced them to my wonderful world of sensations and safe words. These women are talking to their friends and to their husbands. What could be bad about that?

I read a lot! For a book of this topic, it is well edited and better than most I have seen. Most of the words are spelled correctly. Could have been better but it could have been a lot worse.

I give the book an A- for audacity. The author tackled a taboo topic and did a decent job of it.

The first comment reminded me of what happened when I was about 12 years old. I was getting ready to take a bath; and, as I was getting a towel out of the linen closet, a paperback fell out. I was shocked by the cover, and, started reading it. I became so engrossed that the tub almost overflowed. I read a few chapters every night as I waited for the tub to fill. One night as I was turning the faucet off, I dropped the book into the water. I panicked, and, put the book in the back of the linen closet. My father never said anything; probably, because he didn't know which one of us kids
found the book. I never finished reading it because it disappeared.

I love The Onion, it's so funny.

Still humming and haring over reading this book or not though.

Joey - That's unfortunate. It's like Secretary, and the spanking being a cure for cutting.

Six - I hope they will try it.

Dave - I agree there could be more spanking.

Red - I was hoping The Onion would get on the grey bandwagon.

Adeline - Welcome! I'm glad you dropped by.

Ronnie - Neither have I.

DR - I'm relieved to hear it was well-edited. I hate typos.

Julia - True.

Lea - Thanks for letting me know. I must read it.

Kiki - What a funny story. Did he ever replace the book?

Prefectdt - The Onion is excellent. I subscribe to a daily email.

Hermione

Sorry so late to the party. Long day. My sweetbaby beyond vanilla gf did read it for her book club. I asked what she thought. She said she was bored and somewhat offended. She didn't think this was good kink. She asked if I knew some good kink. I sent her The Story of O. No reply yet. :)

Love the onion.

50 shades is not literature but it is educating and entertaining and is bringing "kinky fuckery" to the mainsteam. Can't be bad in my estimation.

That is so funny. it is probably typical of many people. I am sure that there are lots of men and women who have never even heard of the book.

Sunnygirl - I agree that 50 Shades is serving a useful purpose in bringing spanking out of the closet.

Blondie - Well, they have now:)

Emen - Sorry, I missed you. Story of O, eh? That really is kinky, although quite extreme compared with some. let us know her response if you get one.
