Friday FAIL

Vintage advertisement for products that would never be sold today.

The age restriction was much lower then. Anyone six years of age or over could smoke them.

Coca wine combined wine with cocaine, producing a compound now known as cocaethylene, which, when ingested, is nearly as powerful a stimulant as cocaine.

The marketing efforts for coca wine focused primarily on its medicinal properties because it didn't taste very good. The effects were perceived to "fortify and refresh body and brain" and "restore health and vitality."

Toothache? What toothache. Whee!!!

They really do taste like people.

  8. Okay, you really killed me with the Soylent Green remark. Soylent Green is the answer to "What's for dinner?"

  9. You know, the "coca" in Cocacola stood for cocaine. It used to have that in it and the drink was green in color.

The old adds have some nice artwork in them in spite of what they advertise.

  10. I don't think I've ever seen anything more ironic than the asthma cigarettes.
I'm always so amazed at what you find.

  11. Dee - Yes, for real.

    Sunnygirl - So am I.

Joey - Yes, really, but they're made from plankton.

Minelle - It is quite lovely.

Mrs. SB - So do I. That was a pretty cool movie.

Ronnie - It must have been very useful in view of the horrible dentistry techniques of the time.

Lilmisses - It's probably quite nice with a bit of Brie on top.

Kiki - No, those cigarettes are pretty far-fetched (but true).

    Hermione

  12. Asthma cigarettes??? Smoking for asthma? Jeeezus. No wonder people back then only lived to be about 40.

  13. Erica - I can't imagine how smoking could help asthma, but anything to sell cigarettes, I guess.

  14. Those are some odd ads. But I guess even today, some silly things are sold. Bacon scented cologne, anyone?
