Today I'm roasting sweet red peppers from our garden. For many years I was unable to let the green peppers mature and turn red because the slugs would snack on them before they were ripe. We haven't had slugs for several years now -- I don't know why they suddenly disappeared -- so I can let the peppers ripen. I freeze the roasted peppers for use during the year in various recipes.
Speaking of recipes, do any of you remember the good old days when gelatin salads were a staple at family gatherings? Jell-o was used in a variety of ways back then. My grandmother often served Jell-o and cream as a dessert. If you were as really good cook, you would follow these guidelines:
I think I'll pass on a serving of the last ones.

In the 60s we had a thing called 1-2-3 Jello that came in three layers. It was fun.
ReplyDeleteTrifle has always been the perfect home for Jelly :)
ReplyDeleteHave you had ducks visiting your garden in recent years? From experience, I have found the night time eating habits of ducks one of the best ways of dealing with a slug problem.

Yes, I well remember the Jello after-dinner deserts my Mom would make on hot Summer nights.
ReplyDeleteShe had a busy work schedule, so she needed something easy and fast. She would simply combine a pack of Jello (usually "cherry") with a can of unsweetened "fruit cocktail" (mostly peaches and pear, with some grapes and the odd cherry).
All her kids loved these mixes!
There is always room for Jello.
ReplyDeleteJello shots anyone? 😊
