This week we discussed BDSM and autism. Here's what you said:
Norse Cavalier: My local BDSM group has a LOT of autistic people in it - I'm one of them.
You
can also talk about the overlap between BDSMers, autistic people, and
board game players. At one point, autistic Doms were a majority of the
board of my local board game group (though this was not widely known to
the board game players). We make sure the board game group and the BDSM
group never have events on the same weekends, due to the massive
overlap.
Rosco: Hmm interesting. I’m nerdy and socially awkward, but I don’t think I’m on the spectrum.
Prefectdt: I got tested, for a lot of stuff, on the advice of a professional psychologist, that I was seeing at the time, in the 1990s. Autism was one of those things and I came up negative. So, just because you are into an aspect of BDSM, does not automatically mean that you are Autistic. I wonder if it is worth some Boffin's time to do a study to find out the percentages of Autistic and non-Autistic people in the community.
Roz: Very interesting. I guess it may make sense that the structure of BDSM would work for those on the spectrum.
Nana: I was tested for autism 4 years ago, did not have it, did get diagnosed with ADHD tho and there is a huge overlap in people with ADHD and people that are into BDSM as well, makes a lot of sense to me, as a good spanking is one of the few things that can shut up my brain.
Hermione: That was such an interesting discussion. I had no idea ofthe association, but it makes perfect sense. Thank you, Boru!
