Window Shopping

If you were strolling along the sidewalk in a shopping district and saw these panties in a store window, what would your reaction be? A smile at least, or maybe you might step inside to check out the other wares for sale. If you are a resident or a tourist in Virginia Beach, this sight may no longer be available.

The Virginia Beach council voted last week to prohibit display of "vulgar" or "indecent" clothing in the shop windows along the popular Atlantic Avenue boardwalk. The reason is that the lewd messages are spoiling the area's "wholesome" image and may keep people away from the hotels, restaurants and bars in the area. I don't know about you, but I would be more likely to visit the boardwalk if the shop windows were this entertaining. Read the full story, including pictures, here.

Thank you Rosco for finding this gem.

Hermione, thanks for posting.

My serious answer, as someone who felt guilty about my interest/obsession with spanking for more than 10 years, is such public displays help to normalize the practice so it’s a good thing.

I’m also reminded of a clever but subtle t shirt I saw in the window of an S and M store in Vancouver. The white lettering on a black shirt read:

VIDI
VICI
VENI

For those unaware, it’s a double entendre for Julius Caesar’s famous short letter home after conquering France - VENI - VIDI -VICI (I came, I saw, I conquered.) Something useful from three years of Latin.

Hmmm...shocking that the example is considered obscene. I would certainly enter this store. That said, I understand that going much further than the example shown could quickly get offensive.

It just looks crass but harmless to me. Then I imagined myself having to explain to a child, the meaning of what was written on some of those clothing articles and decided that was something that I did not want to do. I will have to think further on this, but I think that there is a big argument for an "Adults Only" shopping street.

Hi Hermione,

I agree with you in that it would personally make me more inclined to visit. However, I also have to agree with the above comments. Where is the line between harmless and offensive.

I have a very simple view: If you want to be 'family friendly' (which is clearly different from wanting to entice adults) then fine. You are a business and have that right. BUT.......don't be hypocrites about it. You want the suggestive undies off the main public walkway? Fine. Now....... what about the suggestive billboards along the road? What about the flagrantly sexual songs routinely played in public spaces like stores or whatever? Bumper stickers on cars on main roads? Sexy TV ads?

And as far as offense, what about religious stuff? What if I don't want my kids exposed to that?

Anyone want to try and figure where 1st Amendment rights begin and end? We've only been arguing over it for over 2 centuries, so I'm sure we're close to an answer (sarcasm)........Maybe we should ask AI? (more sarcasm)

I would ask those who work there, male or female if they wear them and wished to be spanked. Jack

I see nothing"vulgar" or "indecent" about it! And yes, I would certainly be more inclined to visit if I saw this.

It looks like good marketing to me. If you look inside it is nothing more than a beach apparel shop. Sunglasses, sandles, bathing suits. . . The suggestive bottoms are just a hook to get you to go in.
I would buy the Misses a pair just so she can wear them long enough to get over my lap for a spanking.

One more comment. It’s interesting to me that even some of Hermione’s loyal followers think this advertising is inappropriate if children are around.

My kids are grown now. I remember warning them they’d see certain things on the internet, some real and some not, but I don’t remember worrying about their exposures to sexually related material (a few individual people is a different story).

I do remember being upset when they were exposed to violence - mostly movies at friends’ houses, but also when they showed raiders of the Lost Ark to my Kindergartener.

But Rosco, you are talking about your own kids, whom you had a right to decide how they were raised, to some extent. I have never had children of my own, so I am imagining making the explanation to some one else's off spring. Whilst not knowing what their own parents beliefs and parenting methods are and am at risk of crossing the wires of the children, that I am making the explanation to. It is a situation that I would rather not be in.

Prefectdt, I don’t know the perfect answer here. But it’s a pretty small leap from this advertisement to whether they should teach sex ed in public school - anathema to some, but an appropriate part of a curriculum in the eyes of many. I guess I lean toward normalizing sexuality by not hiding it.

And what about woman breastfeeding? When a baby is hungry must the mother run off to some secluded place because people are offended?

Somehow society needs to figure out these boundaries. It doesn’t seem possible to make everyone happy.

And that was the point of my post. Personally, I agree with you about kids and raised mine (bios & steps) that way....but others do feel differently, and that's fine.....but as I said in my post, just be reasonable AND not hypocritical about it.

And, more depressingly but realistically..... society never will figure out these boundaries. People as a group act way stupider than individually. A phenomenon I'll never understand.
