Friday FAIL

It's Friday, and once again I'm sharing one of my pet peeves: the unnecessary use of quotation marks. When you put quotes around a word, it implies that you are being sarcastic or ironic, and that the word itself is in doubt. Here are some examples:

Free, huh? What's the catch? Nothing's really free, amirite?

Who graduated from the medical school in American Samoa by correspondence course.

Single quotes also used improperly.

Okay, so what's really behind the door?

Now let's review what we have learned. Hermione says, "Complete the Caption without using any quotation marks unless you are indicating speech, OK?"

Great fails Hermoine. I'm probably guilty of using quotation marks incorrectly on occasion.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend :)

Hi Hermione, these are too funny, and I fully get you on using quotation marks the wrong way. This can be pretty annoying... and funny :)

Wishing you a happy weekend.

good ones. I am also guilty of using quote marks in the incorrect way and I am sure it annoys folks. Oh well, I guess I should be spanked for it.

"Stairs"? Wha?? What else could possibly be there?

Another annoying thing is when people use quotes, or ALL CAPS, for emphasis. Italics, folks. Use them.

Nice ones. I'm the same as Roz, guilty at times of using quotation mark incorrectly. Thanks Hermione.

Another guilty party here, Hermione!! In fact, my most recent post has a bunch... I think. LOL!

I enjoyed your post. I don't want to know what is behind that stair door. I'd probably run out of there. Many hugs,

<3 Katie

According to the Grammarist, "The rules set forth in this section are customary in the United States. Great Britain and other countries in the Commonwealth of Nations are governed by quite different conventions."

"Don't sell me no 'Canadianisms' Ma'am," says "I'll punctuate it my way" MontanaVega.

To which she should respond: "Check this out:"

Well, you can be sure I wouldn't do those kinds of things.

Roz - No, say it ain't so!

Nina - Yes, they can be both.

Baxter - You should be spanked very hard for it!

Lillyanna - You too? Dear, dear!

Erica - Some people just haven't come to terms with the new fonts. They still think they are using typewriters.

Ronnie - Must try harder!

Katie - Naughty, naughty!

Jon - Thanks for the link. Loved it!

ricky - You'd better not, young man!

Cat - I'd be scared too.
