Sixties Spankos

We recently unearthed our vinyl collection (records, not underwear) from the attic, and Ron and I have been reliving the musical pleasures of days gone by. We each had an assortment from two somewhat different musical periods, but we were delighted to discover that we had a few duplicate albums. In some cases, we've been wondering how on earth we ever could have enjoyed listening to that noise music.

One of the groups I was passionately fond of at age 15 was Herman's Hermits. Forty years later, their music just doesn't have the same appeal, with one notable exception.

I always thought that this song had some spanking references in it.

I've been hurt by love too many times
Not to know the signs of breaking up when they appear.

Don't try to hurt me
Don't try to harm me
Don't try to hurt me, or you'll pay.

'Cos you know I get mad, yeah, go bad
And when I get mad
You know I do things
I really shouldn't do.

I've told you once before, and I'll tell you once again
Don't try to hurt me, or you'll pay

I've told you the first time to be good,
That was almost the second time, but there won't be a third.

Don't try to hurt me
Don't try to harm me
Don't try to hurt me, or you'll pay.

What do you think?

I recall their "Henery the Eighth" off the top of my head and that he was married 7 times before. Now that I'm divorced I think I'll pass on immulating the group. Of course being told that there won't be a third time being told to be good does create a problem cause Hermione, you are always good. I'm afraid thats the bad news, the group just has to much patience.

I still dig Herman's Hermits. Just pull some up on Rhapsody the other day. As a matter of fact, I think I will right now.

Oh Hermione, Herman's Hermits was one of my favourites as well. I'd forgotten this one and I think you could be right.

I'll be humming this all evening now :)

Love.

I still like them, but I've always been fond of the 60s British Invasion groups. Light, fluffy stuff, very sing-able, fun to listen to.

Never heard this particular song -- will have to give a listen!

Who is the band in the picture at the top? -- Erica

Fab - I hear Henry the Eithth quite often on our local Oldies station.

Babyman - I like many of their songs, but had forgotten some.

Ronnie - Oh good, another fan.

Erica - That was the result of not doing my research properly after Googling. They're Spanish wannabees! Thanks for noticing. Can you tell I'm not good with faces? Proper picture is up now.

Hugs,
Hermione

Sorry, I don't remember that one from Herman's Hermits but I have one for you - hope you don't mind. Do you remember "Under My Thumb" by the Rolling Stones? Between the beat (no pun intended!) and the lyrics would you say someone in that group was into spanking?

R - Yes, I do remember that song, and I totally agree with you. There's another song they sing - the name escapes me - in which Mick describes getting the belt across his back.

Hermione

Hermione, I now feel like pulling out my old records for a spin. Never big on Herman's Hermits but whenever I now here "I'm Henery the Eighth" I think of the scene in the movie "Ghost" where Patrick Swayze sings it through the night to bug Whoopi Goldberg into helping him.

Michael - I'd forgotten about that scene. Thanks for reminding me.

Vinyl is all the rage again. I think you can even buy needles for your turntable.

Hugs,
Hermione

Hi again,
I believe it is Jumping Jack Flash.
"I was schooled with a strap right across my back".

And you just reminded me of yet another by the same culprits - Brown Sugar. "Hear him whip the women just around midnight"

Makes you wonder?
R.

It does indeed. I think I'll take a quick read through the Mick Jagger biography on our bookshelf.
