Little Whacker

Good dental health is important for everyone: animals as well as humans. That's why I brush our dogs' teeth. Doesn't everyone? Every evening after dinner, I put a dab of poultry-flavoured toothpaste, made especially for dogs, onto their human baby-sized toothbrushes.

Fluffy is well used to the routine and willingly hops up onto the back of an upholstered chair, where he is at just the right height for me to attend to his pearly whites. Fang, on the other hand, still resists the treatment, even though it has been a regular nightly routine since the day he came to live with us.

So Ron has to hold Fang in his arms, gently but firmly, while I struggle to get the brush inside that tiny mouth. Fang does all he can to prevent me - short of biting, that is - even though he knows I'll win in the end. One of the things he does is stretch out his long front legs and press his claws firmly into my breasts in an attempt to keep me away.

"Titty whacker," Ron calls him. I laugh as I brush, unable to back away from the paws assaulting my breasts until I have finished. When the brushing is over, Fang is released onto the floor, and he scampers over to the treat jar to be rewarded for putting up with my treatment again. I usually need to adjust my top somewhat before I dispense biscuits.

I've mentioned before that our dogs are butt men, just like their dad. Maybe Fang is branching out now.

Hermione, this one is great I laughed so hard, I can see you brushing their teeth and Fang trying to push you away. Or is he really branching out. Can you explain what you mean by they are butt men like your husband.

Arched one - To answer your question, read the post linked to "our dogs are butt men".

LoL Hermione,

I can just about picture you trying to brush Fang's teeth. Ron sure does come out with some doozies! .. "Titty whacker" LoL. Thanks for the laugh :)

We have cats and there is absolutely no way I would be able to get anywhere near being able to brush their teeth.

LOL titty whacker. I'm in a waiting room and got some weird looks from my attempt at stifling the giggles.

I try to keep up with the dogs teeth. He's only 7 lbs which makes this funnier. And before you feel bad, he likes the toothpaste so much he ate an entire tube behind the couch one day.

I have to flip him on his back and sit on his belly. My weight is on my legs beside him. A child has to hold his arms up and I hold his muzzle and toothbrush. While I'm doing this he's wailing and grabbing his arms loose and covering his mouth with his hands. Kids say hes praying for it to end! I wouldn't worry so much other than little dogs get bad teeth when they're older. His very old daddy's only got a few left!

Oh, Fang must be branching out. That is too funny. I love that he wants a treat for being a "butthead".

I never did get the knack of brushing my Sunny Girl's teeth. We went to the vet once a week to get it done.

Gosh so funny!! I am embarrassed to say I am not good with brushing our canine friends' teeth!

Roz - Yeah, cats are another matter entirely!

Chick - Good for you. Small dogs have more dental problems than big dogs. Ours inherited bad teeth from their forebears, and have problems despite my rigorous attention.

Sunny - Once a week? Lucky girl! Good for you for taking care of her teeth, one way or another.

Minelle - It's never too late to start. Let them lick the paste, then practise rubbing the teeth briefly with your finger. You can work your way up to a brush later.

Maybe this is a small dog thing because I never could get our dog to enjoy the toothbrush either. My mother's dog loves it and he is huge.

Titty whacker, cute.

LOL! Hermione, you are a good doggie mom. If more dogs got regular tooth brushing, there would be a lot less "dog breath."

Fang is definitely branching out. Made me laugh.

We could never brush the teeth of our German Shepherd. Nor could the vet:)

Perhaps you need some leather protection there! Perhaps a leather apron or vest? ;)

WOW - you are amazing :) I brush my dogs teeth once a year. He hates it and I don't have the patience to do it.... :)

Great story Hermione I could visualize it all happening while Iwas reading it and by the way great pictures to.

Kat - It's hard to find a toothbrush that will fit into a tiny mouth.

Erica - If only. Poultry-paste breath isn't very appealing either.

Ronnie - Really? I could do anything with our GSDs, but never thought of brushing. It wasn't common at the time.

Scunge - An excellent idea! A leather bib.

Saturn - It's cheaper than frequent dentals and extractions.

Daisy - Aww, sweet!
Dogs do love their moms.

Bob - Thanks. Glad you could see the action.
