Shopping for Erotica

From time to time, I go to my favourite bookstore - it has an erotic fiction section - in search of spanking novels and stories so that I can share them with you each week in my From the Top Shelf feature. I don't always know if I will find spanking stories, but it's usually a good bet that there will be at least one in a short story collection.

I'm no longer embarrassed to purchase such books, so when I got to the cash, I wasn't at all troubled by the cashier's query.

"Are these books any good?"

"Some are; some aren't." I replied.  I wasn't about to give away any secrets, so I didn't elaborate.

"I've always wondered about those books." Really?

I gestured to the collection of short stories I had chosen. "There's usually something that appeals to everyone in one of those."

I thought it odd that someone who worked in the store wouldn't have sampled the section she was curious about, but I left it at that. I should have told her to have a look for herself on her next break. She might be pleasantly surprised.

Amazon is my bookstore of choice for spanking stories. No morer small stores in my neighborhood.

Hermione, you need to be on a motivational poster: "Miss Hermione, recruiting vanillas to TTWD one flavor at a time."

I am so glad that you no longer get embarrassed purchasing such books. Took me a long time to reach that point and I remember - with a chuckle - how as a teen I would be so embarrassed buying a naughty magazine and fervently praying no one I knew would come into the store at that moment.

We only have big book store chains around me and they don't have an erotic section. The store is so big I didn't want to ask anyone so I looked up a book I was interested in on their computer and said it was only available online. How disappointing.

It does make one wonder what clerks think at the checkout when buying a steamy novel. Glad your experience was positive.

I wonder after speaking with you she went to take a look.

Same as Joey. Amazon is where I buy my erotica not because I would be embarrassed just no book stores by us.

Ronnie

Hermione, I would agree with you 100%, how you handled your bookstore 'erotic' shopping. Yes, I am sure you did it with your voluptous backside swaying provocatively. wiht a smile.

I always buy erotica with other types of books such as cookbooks.I don't know why it makes me feel less embarassed.
I read Ronnie's first sentence as
"I wonder after spanking with you,
she went to take a look." Lol.

I used to work in a bookstore that sold both new and 2nd hand books. You can bet I checked out the erotica section, but usually without my coworkers seeing it. The perfect time is when you are dusting the shelves and have a reason to be in that section ;)
I hardly looked at what kind of books somebody was buying. We did have one book that had quite some spanking in it and I would notice it if somebody bought that, but I don't think my coworkers noticed it, since it was not their thing. I did buy that book btw, but I made up a story about it being a gift for a friend. There are some things my coworkers did not need to know about me...

its funny what peopel are embarrassed by. I think i would be the same. I have purchased books through the internet and i get embarrassed by doing that - the people on the other end will never ever see me - but still.

Joey - I shop at Amazon quite a lot now.

Michael - I should have told her to look for books by Devlin O'Neill:-) I used to try to get my ex to buy Penthouse Variations for me, but he wouldn't.

Kaki - Online shopping does have its advantages, but I like to take a look inside before I buy.

Kitty - I suppose they get used to it after a while.

Sarah - Could be, but since i was twice her age, I like to think she was asking an older, experienced woman for advice.

Ronnie - I hope she did, and also hope she found something to her liking. I agree about Amazon; there isn't much of a spanking selection in stores.

Six - My backside was smiling? Quite possibly!

Sweetpea - I do that too. I believe I also bought a vanilla novel and a biography for my husband's birthday on this occasion.

Nerina - The books are there to be bought and enjoyed, so glad to hear you didn't care what customers bought. I hope you enjoyed the spanking book when you finally owned it.

Hugs,
Hermione

Kiwi - Sorry, I missed you. I used to get emails from Amazon with recommendations for purchases based on what I'd already bought. The emails came at work, and I was afraid co-workers who dropped in might see spanking book titles in the subject line in my email account. I discontinued the emails.

Hermione

I like to shop at the local erotic bookshop Come as you Are. But I always turn red when the woman at the counter asks me what I'm looking for, especially if there are lots of other customers. A couple of time's I've squeaked out 'Spanking' but their selection of spanking fiction is not great. I have ordered Rachel Kramer Bussel's stories through them.

Nick - Isn't that a wonderful name for a shop? I've been to an adult store with the same name. I agree, it's hard to ask for spanking books. Better to browse and find them on your own.

I don't buy any erotica anymore. I have found that some of the best writers of amazing and sexy erotic fiction are bloggers who put it out there for free and often with a visual bonus too and I admit to being a very visual girl.

Hi Molly,

I agree there are many fine writers in the blogosphere, writing specifically for my taste. Ebooks are another good source.
