Dangerous Method

A Dangerous Method, the new movie about Carl Jung, Sigmund Freud and the birth of psychoanalysis, recently opened in US theatres, and I assume will be coming to Canada soon. The dangerous method is, in part, spanking. Keira Knightly, who plays the role of patient Sabina Spielrein, initially turned down the role because of the spanking scenes.

But in a recent article, Knightly revealed that working with David Cronenberg, Michael Fassbender and Viggo Mortensen (who portrays Freud) was too enticing to walk away. It also helped that Cronenberg promised the two spanking scenes would be clinical.

"I phoned him up initially to turn it down because I thought they were incredibly important for the piece. So it wasn't a question of trying to negotiate them out of the film because I thought they were very necessary for the film. But I just thought, 'I don't think I can do that.'

"So, I phoned up David and said, 'I love you, I love your work, but I really don't think that I want to do this.' And he said, 'Well it would be a tragedy if you turned the role down because of that, so if necessary we can take them out.' And I said, 'No, because I understand why they are there'. He said, 'Well look, I don't want it to be sexy, and I don't want it to be voyeuristic. I want it to be clinical.'

"We talked for quite a long time about exactly what it was and trying to understand it psychologically. Once we discussed, I said 'Alright, fine, as long as it is not sexy. That brutal horrible aspect is kept, and it isn't a sexy spanking scene.'"

Sexy or clinical, I want to see that spanking! Watch it here (thanks, Chross.)

The movie will stir some interesting debate.

There is a trailer for the movie that shows a few seconds of the spanking scene. It appears to be more erotic than clinical. Maybe Keira Knightley changed her mind about the scene.

So do I Hermione!!! :)

Hermione, I have never believed in censorship. So I am pleased that the spanking scene which is an important part of this sexual fetish movie, was left intact. Hollywood, like it did with the movie "Secretary, must grow up, to reality.

Tricky one. Can't stand KK, but have to see the spanking scenes. I suspect the latter will outweigh the former in the long run.
Anyway, what's the problem with clinical. At times it can be really rather thrilling.

Same here, sexy or clinical I want to see it. I'm not a fan of Kiera but I think it will definitely be an interesting film.

Not sure when it will show in the UK.

Ronnie

Watched the trailer. The spanking scene(s) will probably get a lot of attention in the media. They are already highlighting it in the trailer.

Watched the trailer. That is going to be a hard movie to watch. I may have to skip that one.

Joey - Yes, I've seen the trailer, and I agree, it was pretty erotic.

Dee - I hope it comes to a cinema near you soon.

Six - I'm glad too.

OFG - Sure, a spanking by any other name still hurts as much.

Ronnie - I'm not familiar with Kiera so I'll approach it with an open mind.

Sky - I think it will attract attention too.

Rose - You must do what's best for you.

Hugs,
Hermione

Thanks for bringing attention to this movie! I hadn't heard about it, but I'm a huge sucker for historical films, David Cronenberg, and spanking (uh, all for different reasons!) Seems worth checking out :)
Best,
Katie

Great information about the film... another way of them hyping the spanking scenes (maybe) Clinical, or sexy, they should still be fun.
Sad, though, that so many woman would have offered to be a stand-in (or would that be an over the knee double) for the spankings. I shall go see it soon, as it should be out in our area

The movie interests me either way, but I'm curious to see what the fuss is all about with the spanking scenes.

Hi Katie,

Welcome! I'm so glad you enjoy my blog; it's comments like yours that keep me going.

Kiwi - I've been watching for the DVD too; guess it's a bit early for that.

Red - I suppose there would have been a long lineup of women willing to be her body double.

Lea - I hope you get to see it soon and let us know what you thought.

Hugs,
Hermione

I have seen the trailers and also some of the discussion already out there about this movie. I am wondering how much is true and how much is fiction. It sounds like an intense movie with Freud coaching Jung.

I read your blog and I like it.

Bobbie Jo - I suspect it contains some fact, with a healthy measure of fiction. I'm so glad you enjoy my blog:)
