Not an implement I would enjoy

The movie McLintock! was on television earlier this week, and was included in the local newspaper's suggestions of the best shows to watch. Here's an abridged version of the synopsis:

The fact that this 1963 western was based on Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew boggles the imagination. In this version, John Wayne is cast as a wealthy rancher...whose estranged wife suddenly reappears for a proper divorce and to obtain custody of their daughter. After wrangling with corrupt officials and shooting a few bad cowpokes, McLintock wades into the battle of the sexes -- culminating with both his wife and his daughter getting a good spanking.
Different times.

Different times indeed. Sadly, as much as I love the thought of watching a movie with three spankings in it, I can't get past the idea of using a coal shovel as a spanking implement. We passed on the movie.

Hermione, this really is one movie no spanko should miss. It has had me enthralled since it came out when I was around 11. Maureen O'Hara once said that John Wayne really seemed to enjoy the spanking scene they shared and made it real. He also kept fluffing lines so the scene would have to be redone. She didn't sound like she had hated it either! LOL! Remember the shovel is used over several layers of clothing.

PK - Thanks for sharing that. I didn't realize how much they both enjoyed the scenes.

Yep, it's a fun movie, and as PK said, you have to remember multiple petticoats under a long skirt, all in place.

I think that John Wayne spanked Maureen O'Hara in the Quiet Man as well. I wonder how many retakes they did of that scene. He used his hand. I agree with you Hermione, that shovel is nasty.

The film was on UK TV last week was going to watch it as I hadn't seen it in years but one thing and another forgot about it. I don't remember his daughter getting spanked.

From what PK says they sound like that had fun shooting the spanking scenes.

Sara - Yes, I suppose they didn't feel much through all that padding.

Joey - Really? I'll have to try and find that movie.

Ronnie - She got spanked, then they got engaged. One of the best lines was - paraphrased - "Who knew that a spanking would lead to them getting married."

Hermione

@Joeyred - John Wayne was given a stick with which to "Beat the lovely lady" in The Quiet Man but after taking it home he did not use it. Sorry to be the bearer of these tidings but it is how the movie went.

Better spanked with a coal shuttle than the bucket Hermione :)

I'm with you, Hermione. I've never understood why people make such a big deal out of this movie. Yes, there are spankings in it. Quality, people, quality! Coal shovels??? Please!

Actually, the movie is really good, and I have grown to like John Wayne a lot.
aside:John Wayne Marina, featured in the June 2003 issue of SEA Magazine as “Best of the West” for small marinas, was constructed in 1985 on 22 acres of land donated by the John Wayne family. John Wayne frequented Sequim Bay waters aboard the family yacht – the “Wild Goose” – and prior to his death envisioned a marina in the scenic bay.
The movie is fun, the spankings are over lots of clothes, yet very erotic for TTWD.
I recommend it to you. PPS: I also own a dvd of it.
But no spanking with coal shovels like the one you show.
happy spankings

I just saw this movie for the first time last week. Admittedly I don't like Westerns, it was almost too corny to sit through. Different generation I guess. To me, it wasn't worth watching just for the brief spanking scenes. As far as the shovel, definitely not something that would be getting near by bottom!

Yes, different generation, different time.

You all have to understand that back then, we all didn't have what you have now.

This movie still holds a special place in my heart.

To all that didn't like the movie :>P

How about the Little Rascals? SSHHH...Don't eat the mush. It's spoiled...pass it on.

In the DVD commentary, Maureen O'Hara said she really felt that spanking, not having as many "protective" layers as Stefanie Powers had in the earlier scene. She claimed to be black and blue later.

Now I wouldn't gainsay the lady, but I would be surprised to learn that the coal shovel was an actual metal tool and not a wooden prop. But, I've been wrong before!

I am fairly sure the loud PRANG! with each spank was an sound effect added post production, and well done!

Prefectdt - I agree, the bucket would be worse :)

Erica - Quality, not quantity, for sure. Three half-as.... er, inferior spankings don't do it for me.

Red - I've never been a JW fan, but I also have the DVD. I bought it out of curiosity, but watching once was enough.

Lea - Really corny. I totally agree with you - the spankings aren't worth the struggle.

bree512 - Welcome! I see what you mean, though. Way back then, spankings were not a dime a dozen online.

Dave - Yes, those PRANGs were added later. The costumes would have muffled any impact noise.
I must see if my DVD has a commentary.
