Guess the Implement - the Reveal

 This is the full view of the implement you saw in the last post. It's called a Boa Constrictor Strap Wrench and it's used to tighten or loosen odd-shaped objects. Congratulations to all those who guessed correctly!

This one is from Ron's toolbox. According to the online catalogue, it comes in two sizes "for general household or heavy-duty applications. Non-slip, soft rubber handle for a secure grip and superior comfort. Incredibly strong, but won't scratch."

This is the underside. As you can see, the useful part of this tool is the loop on the right. The excess length of rubber strap on the left is the business end for - ahem - other household uses :)

Guess the Implement

We haven't played "Guess the Implement" for some time, so let's have some guesses about this little beauty.

What could this object be used for, other than spanking? It is about 2 feet (60 cm) long, but that's the only hint I'm going to give you.


What do you think it is?  I'll accept all guesses: serious, silly, or somewhere in between. I'll publish the answer in the next post.

Guess the Implement - The Reveal

The mystery implement is a corn cob striker, used for calling wild turkeys.

No, not that Wild Turkey...

This kind of turkey, native to North America.

It is popular in some locations to hunt them in the fall, although personally I can't imagine why anyone would want to shoot such an elegant bird. Wild turkeys communicate with a series of gobbles, squeaks, chortles and other assorted vocal sounds. Hunters use various devices to imitate these sounds and lure the turkeys into firing range.


Here are a few more strikers, all made of corn cobs, although strikers can also be made of wood.

I've never seen one in action, but I believe the idea is to tap or rub the striker against a piece of slate with a sound box attached, and emulate the sound of a wild turkey.

 
I suppose you have to have heard what a wild turkey sounds like to know if you're doing it right. I haven't had the pleasure.

Guess the Implement

We haven't played Guess the Implement for a long time, so here's one for you. I found it in a local thrift shop and it only cost a dollar. I wasn't sure exactly what it was supposed to be, and really didn't think it would pack much of a wallop spanking-wise, but the price was right.

It looks handmade and rustic. The label said it was one of two pieces, but the second piece wasn't attached and no one knew if it was another of the same or something different (like a ball?)

So what do you suppose this is? There are no right or wrong answers because I haven't a clue myself. Let your imagination soar!

It wasn't made for that kind of heavy use!

Guess the Implement

This is the paddle that I bought at the same time as the ivory hairbrush. It's a sturdy, large wooden implement, and the other side is even more interesting:

So, it's a souvenir of someone's holiday in the Big Easy. But what do you think it was intended for? Is it something to do with food preparation or cooking? Or do people buy these to use in a different way?

Guess the Implement - the Reveal

This wonderful paddle is actually a knee paddle tape weaving loom. Congratulations to Kelly Red and Miranda for correctly guessing it is used for weaving. They must be two old-fashioned girls who like doing things by hand.

Here is the description from the web page it appeared on:

Before the time of elastic and zippers, tapes similar to shoe strings were woven to gather waistbands and make other clothing accessories. These were done on tape looms. 

This loom is patterned after some historical looms. The warp is threaded through the slats and holes to produce the shed for weaving. The warp ends are tied to the weavers waist and another stable object similar to using a back strap loom. The knee paddle is held between the weaver's legs- curved cut outs are on each side for this purpose.

This produces a warp faced weave.

My friend Season sent me this picture of an implement that she has had a little experience with. Knowing Michael, I'll bet it's used more than just a little, but Season is very modest.

So, when this wooden charmer is not warming somebody's backside, what is it used for? Leave your guess as a comment or email me, and I will unveil the mystery tomorrow.

And it wasn't hard. I should have photoshopped the name out. Doh!

Here's what it looks like in use.

My grandmother always hung her laundry on the clothesline outside, even in winter. When she brought in the clothes, they were often frozen stiff, so she hung them on a dryer, much like this one, that was attached to the wall near the wood stove in the kitchen. Then she put newspapers underneath to catch the drips as the laundry thawed. I can still recall the the smell of fresh, clean laundry that filled the warm room.

This looks very much like a bundle of canes or other disciplinary implements, but it also has a different and functional vanilla purpose. My grandmother had one and used it regularly.

Today's Mystery Implement is a bit different than usual. I found it in a thrift shop, and it really looks like a handmade wooden paddle. But do you think there might have been another use for it? I can't decide. Perhaps it was intended to have a picture glued to one side of it. Or maybe some teenaged boy made it in shop class to paddle his girlfriend with.

Do you think it had a vanilla purpose? If so, what?

When I found this little gem, my first thought was how exciting it would be to show it to Ron when I got home. Then I remembered that I was with a vanilla friend. How would I explain my purchase to her if she saw me carrying it to the checkout? What would I tell her I was going to use it for?

Guess the Implement - the Reveal

It's no mystery that this month's mystery implement is a boot jack (aka welly taker offer, boot removal aid thingy, boot doofer, or spurner/eschewer). Who knew it had so many different names?



If you wear boots for some activity like horseback riding, you will find it much easier to remove your boots with one of these handy helpers.



Step on the boot jack with one foot, and slip the heel of the other foot into the curved opening, then pull your leg up and out of the boot.



The boot comes off without a struggle!

It's time for another lightning round of Guess the Implement. I was inspired by this handy little wooden pervertable that was featured at one of the booths at a recent craft show. It's handmade in Canada.

Many of you knew exactly what this month's mystery implement was. This amazing gadget is used for pulling a hot oven rack forward, so you can reach whatever you're baking in the oven. And by hooking the curved inner part over the rim of a casserole dish or baking pan you can pull it closer to you. And by pressing the curved outer edge against the dish, you can position it exactly where you want it without reaching too far in.

Thank you to all who played Guess the Implement! I'll have to come up with something much more mysterious next time.

What do you suppose this wooden creation is used for when it's not reddening someone's bottom? Last month you were all so clever at guessing the mystery implement that I think I made it too easy. This might be a little tougher. Then again, maybe not.
